DnD offers you the ability to become a unique character and escape into a world of fantasy and magic. It is only fitting for you to want a dice set that matches your character’s personality and abilities. There are various categories to choose from when looking for the best dice set for you: metals, gemstones and plastics are a few of the most popular. Each has its own set of pros and cons, along with a list of steps you can take to care for your dice so they can stay safe and scratch-free.

Weight

One criterion that many players look for when researching different dice sets is weight. The weight determines the feel of your dice and the heft of your roll. Metal dice are the heaviest of the categories and weigh about 8 ounces per set. They might roll shorter than lighter dice, but they will demand attention when rolled on harder surfaces. Heavy dice feel more satisfying, and metal dice are known to be more precise than tumbled plastic dice.

Gemstones come in second with a weight class of about 4 ounces per set. These will still demand some attention compared to the plastic dice, which are only about 1 ounce per set. However, both gemstone and plastic dice have a further rolling distance than the metal class.

Durability

Metal dice have the most durability and generally do not require additional protection. Plastic dice are also very durable and can be stored together in a dice bag or other container. Gemstone dice, however, must be handled with more care. It is recommended to roll gemstone dice on padded surfaces, like a padded dice tray. It is also recommended to store gemstone dice separate from your other dice.

Precision

Dice precision is brought up as a discussion amongst collectors quite often, and though production results do bring a greater degree of accuracy, the common forms of manufacturing all roll true enough for enjoyable role-playing. If one is looking into the science of precision and dice rolling, many articles explain degrees of probability and standard deviation. As for the different processes and what to expect: Metals are a mold form, typically giving you a standard precision across their range. Plastic dice are often mold formed and then put through a ‘tumbler’ to smooth out the edges, which does cause a greater degree of deviation on precision. However, unless it is an extreme case, tumbling generally does not alter the precision outside of the noticeable range. Gemstone dice are hand-carved, and they are often straight-edged, which helps with the precision but do not possess the consistency of a molded die.

Price

If you are just starting your adventure, you may want to try a few plastic dice sets as they are the cheapest and most commonly found sets. They come in a large variety of colors and patterns and are perfect for those who are just beginning to learn the ins and outs of DnD.

Metal and gemstone sets are more durable and unique and tend to be more expensive. Gemstones look and feel magical, which can help you get into your character’s mindset. However, because gemstones are semi-precious stones, they do tend to be the most expensive of the three dice categories.

Care

No matter what type of dice set you choose, make sure to care for your dice correctly. Dice bags are used for carrying your sets around wherever you go. Gemstone dice should be kept in cases with individual storage compartments. There are many creative dice cases you can choose from, and you will also get a free case with most gemstone dice purchases.

You will also need to be careful about where you roll your dice sets. You could not only damage your dice, but you could also damage your tables, counters or floors. A simple dice tray with a velvet interior will give you a solid flat surface to roll your dice. Most dice trays also have sides that will ensure that you dice stay organized and on your table.

Whether you are looking for a metal look for your paladin or a magical one for your druid, there are dice sets ready to help you continue your adventure. With the proper care and attention, they will help you conquer all the obstacles along your path.
